“Every COP that I’ve been to has shaped my thinking, and in a really global kind of way. I’m working in a local context, but it’s always nice to look at what’s happening at the global level and try to translate that to the work I’m doing. I always felt like there was a disconnect between what is happening at the top, which at the highest level is the COP, and on the ground.” Adrian Leitoro 2022 Drylands Restoration Steward and the of Founder, Nature and People as One (NAPO)

“The past year has flown by for me, but looking back, my heart is filled with gratitude, joy and hope for the future. Being the GLF’s 2022 Forest Restoration Steward has contributed enormously to these fond memories. Since I was officially announced as a Restoration Steward on the International Day of Forests (21 March) last year 2022 (super timely), my days have been filled with the new opportunities and program activities that came along.” Eva Makandi (Kandi), 2022 Forest Restoration Steward and the Founder of Light on a Hill Organization (LOAH)

“We need to enhance community by building really strong trust with communities and governments that restoration is for our good, and for the good of the environment.” Camille Rivera GLFx Mindanao Chapter Coordinator, 2021 Wetlands Restoration Steward and the Co-founder of Oceanus Conservation

What have we learned from the Biodiversity COP16?

5 Nov 2024

We were in Cali, Colombia for the 2024 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16), joined by attendees from around the world to discuss the future of economies, youth opportunities in landscape work and the importance of preserving biodiversity. The Irinida flower – the ‘flower that never dies’ – inspired the event, representing the spirit of youth, women, Indigenous Peoples, local communities and countless others who have helped shape biodiversity policies for over 30 years.

How to be a good neighbor

1 Oct 2024

Last week’s GLF Africa conference was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we unite and build strategies for change from the ground up. We witnessed the power of communities sharing how they can reshape the future of landscapes and livelihoods. These moments of collective energy remind us that real change begins at the community level, growing into movements that can shift policies and reshape systems. The seeds planted here can shift policies, inspire further landscape action and

How young people can lead the change

30 Jul 2024

We’re at a crossroads for the world we seek to build. This is an extremely important year for environmental politics as new governments across the world pledge to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises. But when will we move from words to action? Despite being often overlooked and tokenized in environmental discussions, young people play a key role in ensuring that our governments aren’t simply repeating empty promises.

Are you our next Restoration Steward?

27 Jun 2024

How many times have you been told that young people are leading the charge for environmental justice? Sitting on the floors outside negotiation rooms. Protesting on the streets. Defending their land. Nurturing landscapes and seascapes with little to no resources. Creating safe spaces and beautiful murals for futures for all life on Earth. This movement also relies on the tireless efforts of countless women, Indigenous folks and people from across the Global South – the very people who are already

The climate solution we forgot

30 May 2024

This month, we celebrated two important international days: World Bee Day and the International Day of Biological Diversity. It’s always important to remember that our dreams and efforts should never be confined to just one day. Instead, let’s harness our energy and passion to build community and people power, health the Earth and empower ourselves every day.

We can’t save the planet alone!

30 Apr 2024

We’re writing this to you on Earth Day, an occasion first celebrated in 1970 and followed by annual commemorations and countless other environmental awareness campaigns ever since. This year’s Earth Day focused on reducing plastic use – more specifically, slashing plastic production by 60% by 2040. This got us thinking: each April, we are reminded of the importance of honoring and safeguarding our planet. But at the same time, these environmental celebrations have been co-opted by big polluters seeking to

Do we really have to “save the planet”?

26 Mar 2024

Women are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis – especially women of color and those in the most affected areas. As the crisis intensifies social and economic tensions, it is women and girls who often find themselves on the frontlines facing exploitation and violence. This inconvenient truth has been said countless times, but women continue to be underrepresented in the spaces where climate policies are crafted.

As you’re probably aware, February was celebrated in many parts of the world as a time of love. But what does love have to do with the environment? We believe that love and community can be a powerful antidote to eco-anxiety. Not just romantic love, but a more holistic love for our planet, our communities and ourselves.

25 Jan 2024

Happy New Year! From the GLF Youth and YIL teams, we wish you a healthy, intentional, loving and adventurous 2024.
