Maria Caroline Puspa Herin
Country: Indonesia
Maria comes from East Nusa Tenggara. She graduated as a Forestry Bachelor in 2013, and has been keen to work for Forest Protection since then. Her first exposure to forest management and protection was in 2013, working with the Forest Management Unit in Ketapang District, West Kalimantan, having later worked with Community Development for International Animal Rescue, in West Kalimantan. These experiences made her realize that in order to protect the forest and its biodiversity, we need to work with the local community. They have local knowledge on how to manage the forest in many ways that have sustainable value. But sometimes, they have no ability to protect their forest from outside drivers. This encouraged her to establish a social enterprise named Parahita Borneo, which empowers local communities in coastal areas around Ketapang District, to have the ability in order to advocate for their natural resources.
